Gender, Ecstasy and the Revolution - the social and political aspects of the ancient rites of dionysus
Chiara Baldini
Who is Dionysus and why do we need to care? How can a Greek god be relevant in today's culture, more than 2500 later? In this presentation we will discover how the wild and extreme Dionysian rit- uals came from prehistoric shamanic practices and spread like wildfire in Greek and Roman culture. We will explore how they challenged the social rules on gender identity and allowed people to learn and practice tolerance and equality. What happened then, when their revolutionary ideas became too dangerous for the ruling classes?
